Semiautomatic weapons are permitted for civilians. Furthermore, firearm makers and dealers must keep a record of all weapons made and traded. Licenses are valid for one year, after which all documents must be resubmitted. The application process for permission to carry a gun requires all of the above requisites as well as a request justifying the need to transport the weapon.

These days most NYPD recruits get a choice of a department-issued gun. They also only use Speer’s 124-grain Gold Dot hollow point +P load on duty. The one constant for NYPD officers is they have and remain loyal to 9mm pistols.
